PRIM x NOW GALLERY

ILLUSTRATORS TO THE FRONT
at NOW Gallery

15 MAY 2022

To complement the NOW Gallery 2022 Young Artist Commission by Joy Yamusangie Feeling Good. PRIM offered an interactive workshop designed to provide illustrators with insight and the tools to earn commissions in publishing.

Loulou Clarke, Art Director at Penguin Random House’s Ebury Publishing lead a free 2-hour workshop to give attendees the tips they need to be the next book cover designer.

Ebury is the home of non-fiction and publishers of works such as You Are Your Best Thing, Living Whilst Black and Micheala Coel’s Misfitz. Queer and Black priority but open to all.’

Alongside the workshop – in keeping with PRIM’s overall focus to expand everyone’s bookshelves – we curated a small library filled with works focusing on illustration, sculpture work, animation and fine art by or centring African, Caribbean and Afro-Latin artists.

The collection included the following works;
Elizabeth Cartlett: In The Image of People - Heather Nickels
Mirror Reflecting Darkly: The Rita Keegan Archive
Africa Tales: A Barefoot Collection - Gcina Mhlophe
Contemporary African Art: Second Edition: 1 (World of Art) - Sidney Littlefield
Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic - Eugene Tsai

5 Tips from Loulou

  1. You'll need to curate your portfolio as a website, Instagram or PDF to email round. You will always be asked for work samples.
  2. As uncomfortable as it is, it's crucial to get yourself seen by self -promoting. Don't think of it as showing off but more of sharing what you've been working on and engaging with other creatives through your work.
  3. Network and connect with the publishing design communities. They will be your biggest support.
  4. Be trend aware and stay current with designs appearing on bookshop shelves and other inspirations outside of publishing.
  5. Get to know the publishing world, identify genres and areas you think your work would align well with and go for it. Reach out to design teams or agencies and find your own opportunities.
